The division continues,
by dividing into Thirds, Fourths, Fifths, Sixths, etc. At some point
however, it would be very difficult to hear the individual overtones without
sophisticated equipment. The diagram that follows only shows
overtones to the twelve partial. Beyond this point, you would begin
to have quarter steps, eighth steps etc. For our purposes, we will
really only need to understand overtones to the seventh partial.
Overtones
Natures Chord
Now lets follow the overtones
and see what has been created. As we proceed up the overtones, the
first chord that we recognize is the "C" Major Triad*.
This is Natures Chord, it is not man made, it has been around forever.
Since this is the most natural division of sound, we gravitate towards
it.
Seventh Chord
If we continue up, we next
create a Seventh Chord. This is a very
special type, you will notice that it is built on a Major Triad,
and that the fourth note is one whole step below the original starting
letter (root tone). This will be very significant as we will
discover later in this course* .
